The Firsts of Fall

Welcome, Fall. So glad you've brought all your beautiful colors, your cool weather, and your sweet and spicy smell with you. Truly, you are welcome here!

When fall comes around to my part of town, I look forward to Pumpkin Spice lattes, crunchy leaves, boots, and hoodies. I find myself sniffing the air much more often than otherwise necessary simply to smell...yep, you guessed it...fall.

Fall is quite possibly my favorite season simply because you can actually watch the earth changing and it's so exciting! Yes, it means that winter is right around the corner with it's snow and ice and freezing cold. But I like to live in the moment. I like to live in today and let tomorrow take care of itself. And today, it's fall.

Today I'm going to take advantage of the cool breeze, roll my windows down and turn the air off. Today I'm going make the kids go outside and play and get some energy out while they can. Today I'm going to make sure my boots are still in good shape for the season. Today, I'm going to enjoy fall.

It's amazing what will happen when you just stop and look around at the world and how its changing right in front of you. Kinda puts a lot of things in perspective.

Try it. It might change your life.

There's a Spring in My Step...

Spring is here!

The earth is in its "new beginnings" stage, and I feel like it's starting a trend. Along with the happy little daffodils, the bright green baby leaves on each tree, the tiny pink blooms on Gwyneth (the tree in my front year), and bright sun that has dipped closer to earth, comes a closet full of spring clothes that I've kept in storage for about six months, new flip flops from Old Navy, road trips with the windows down, and a whole bunch of new freckles. :)

Spring reminds me of beginnings. Fresh, new, bright, happy beginnings. Beginnings filled with flowers and hearts and candy. :) Beginnings that make me smile and laugh and love. Spring reminds me of new. New found favorites, new clothes, new shoes, new sunglasses. :)

With each new beginning memories are made and others are put to rest with the winter. With each new beginning I feel free and happy and fresh.

Life change moment: His mercies are new every morning.

When you make a mistake, you don't have to wait for spring to come around again for you to feel fresh or renewed. Because when He died, He did it for every sin, regardless of when it was committed. When He said His mercy would cover every wrong choice we had ever made, He meant now, today, this second. You don't have to wait for a day, a week, a month, a year. You can have forgiveness today.

His mercy rewrote my life, because His mercy is new every single morning.

Happy Spring :)

Making a Difference...

My dad used to tell a story about a man who was walking a deserted beach at low tide. He thought he was quite alone until he saw a figure moving in his direction some distance off. Every few paces the stranger would stop, bend down, and then toss something into the surf. The man was puzzled, but kept watching as the lone man walked and threw things into the ocean. When they got close enough the man asked the stranger, "What are you throwing into the water?"

"Starfish," the stranger replied.

The man looked around and for the first time noticed that starfish littered the entire beach where he had been walking.

"You see," the stranger said, "when the tide goes out, the starfish are left on the sand and if they can't get back into the water, they die."

"But there are thousands of starfish here. You can't possibly make a difference," the man said, sweeping his hand out over the starfish strewn beach.

The stranger just smiled and reached down and picked up another starfish and threw it into the water.

"It made a difference to that one," he said. And he continued walking the beach, and making a difference as he went.

Many times we think that the things we do go unnoticed or unappreciated. There are those times when we do something, and we stop and think about how big of a difference we are really making. It's a struggle to go on in life when we feel like we can't make a difference in the world.

What we forget is that to make a difference in the world, we need only to have an effect on one person. If you can change one life today, you have changed the world.

In this new year, I hope to remember that great change can begin with one single person, and that person can be me, if I want it to be. With an encouraging word, a smile, a hello, a handshake, a hug, you can change someone's life. And ultimately, you can change the world.
